‘Indian Idol’ cheered

Siliguri: As Prashant Tamang, 24, was crowned ‘Indian Idol-3’ at the finale of the two-month-long talent hunt, celebrations erupted in the Darjeeling hills of West Bengal, from where he hails.

The revelry started as soon as actor John Abraham announced the name on Sunday night. People from different walks of life burst crackers, and hugged and applied colour powder on one another.

Fireworks boomed. Decorations with lights, flags and festoons were everywhere. A large number of people from the region had voted by means of SMS for him since September 21.

Educational institutions in the region had a holiday on Monday. Processions were taken out in Darjeeling Sadar, Kurseong and Kalimpong. The district administration deployed extra security in the hills.

In Gangtok, people, particularly the youth, celebrated with firecrackers. People who were glued to their television sets during the live telecast featuring Tamang and Amit Paul, a native of Meghalaya, as contenders, instantly started celebrations as the name of the young man from Darjeeling was announced. They congratulated one another. Many young people took to the streets and raised slogans such as ‘Prashant Zindabad.’ The celebrations continued throughout the night in many places. — PTI
