Indian Idol: What is wrong with Prashant Tamang?

Today, I was shocked by the attitude of some judges of Indian Idol about Prashant Tamang. Today was the day of elimination and in bottom danger zone there were: Abhishek Kumar, Charu Semwal, Deepali and Puja Chatterjee.

Obviously, some judges did not like this matter. Anu Malik frankly said that Prashant Tamang did not deserve to remain safe. He even said that Prashant Tamang knew this in his heart that he did not sang well.

I felt disgusted from this kind of bad attitude from Anu towards Prashant Tamang. Prashant Tamang is a good singer and that is why thousands of fans are still with him and they are trying their best to make him Indian Idol. He has brought pride and hope for millions of ordinary people in eastern part of India and even in Nepal. Prashant Tamang is not from a rich and elite family. Perhaps, this is his only fault. Prashant Tamang has the guts to struggle and thrive.

Anu Malik does not need to like Prashant. I know that millions of people like him around the world.

Prashant Tamang dressed as Chowkidar update

What does Sony want to prove? Maybe some of the uneducated lot are chowkidars and it doesn't mean the rest of other Indian community don't do Chowkidary jobs. Is it that we are the only specialized lots for Chowkidars. I guess not. Yes, maybe in the past we were, but loyal, but times have changed. If you recall, then were all the Indian communities modernized in the past - All were gawars as we were and this is not the right move - degrade all communities along with us then it would be satisfactory saying this was just for fun, but why only us? Why was not Emon clad in Dhotis doing his farming job - Most of Bengal is under Agriculture so Bengalis should be nothing but farmers Or doing a manual rickshaw pulling act. And the rest goes to all other communities as they are showcased in cinemas. If you want to showcase some community, show it the right way, but not by making its mazaak!!

They should have instead showed how our Gorkha soldiers laid their lives for their "This India". There are thousands of recruits every year and hundreds are dying so that you Indian folks can sleep and rest your ass in peace and WHAT A WAY TO THANK US!

Can you folks even imagine how many of the Gorkha people have laid their lives till now - talk about LOC - its a shame that we cannot respect each other and that is why we all Indians are so much discriminated in foreign countries. Ask those who are abroad and earning their daily bread.

Instead other countries recognize our potential more than our fellow Indian friends and if you don't believe click the above Wikipedia Link or UK's Gorkha site

To inform all, the Nepalese community is well educated and better than some existing ones.

The Following news appeared in The Telegraph on 21st and it really tormented me.
====================================
“Hum bolega to bologe ke bolta hai…” sang Prashant Tamang, and the hills erupted once again.

But it wasn’t in applause for the local boy who has made it to the last 10 of Sony’s Indian Idol contest.

The Gorkha community from Darjeeling to Sikkim — which has been voting en masse for Tamang and even holding rallies in his support — was furious the Calcutta police constable was made to dress up as a chowkidar for the song telecast last night.

“This has humiliated the entire Gorkha community. Does the channel want to send a message that Gorkhas are only meant to be chowkidars?” asked Tenzing Khambachay, commissioner of a Darjeeling municipality ward, voicing a grouse the community has long held.

Hill residents hoisted black flags at Darjeeling Chowrasta when Calcutta police orchestra — where Tamang is the lead singer — performed to drum up support for their colleague. Protest posters surfaced across the hills and residents wore black armbands through the day.

“Such crass stereotyping of our community must be challenged and countered,” said Tshering Topgyal, a Kalimpong resident who had organised a vote-for-Prashant rally a few weeks ago.

Tamang was enacting Pran’s role in the 1974 film Kasauti, where Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini play the sahib and memsahib to whom he sings. Two other Indian Idol contestants played Amitabh and Hema in the spoof.

The row over Gorkha typecasting comes soon after a Delhi police booklet for Northeast students was found to reinforce stereotypes.

“How many times do we have to prove ourselves?” asked Darjeeling MLA Pranay Rai. It was because of incidents like these that the hill people had to struggle for their identity — a reference to the Gorkhaland agitation — he said.

The hills have been following with pride the progress of the first local boy in the contest, and voting away furiously. In Indian Idol, which is in its third edition, the fate of contestants depends on the number of audience votes they can poll after each round.

Last month, hill residents had turned violent when SMSes they had sent didn’t reach Sony.

Tamang needn’t worry that the text messages will dry up after the chowkidar act, which sources close to him said he had been unwilling to do.

“It is now time for the hill people to cast as many votes as possible,” said Khambachay, who wondered why Tamang could not have been asked to play the policeman he is.

Stray voices of protest against the youth did rise. “Under no circumstances should he have agreed to do last night’s episode. We have been voting for him because we believed he was one of us. He has let us down,” said Jyoti Karki, a community leader in Kalimpong, who wants him to walk out of the show.

But others appealed to the hills to vote for Tamang with greater vigour. A meeting in Gangtok passed a resolution to continue supporting him.

“Many people have felt angry and hurt with Prashant because of the way he was dressed for the episode. We appeal to them all to continue to vote for him because he was compelled to do so by the channel. We will take up the issue with Sony, said Kishore Moktan, the convener of the Sikkim Journalists’ Forum.

MLA Rai wanted an unconditional apology from the channel.

But a Sony spokesperson in Mumbai said: “It wasn’t our intention to hurt anyone’s sentiments. He was dressed to suit the song. Some weeks back, another contestant, Abhishek, had dressed as a Tamilian to suit the song he was singing. We see nothing wrong in it.”

prashant tamang
Well... so to speak of being Nepali and of Nepali origin living anywhere in the world raises a few thoughts in my mind. I have been recently watching the Indian Idol reality show. The show is great as it showcases the talent of the Indian artistes and the upcoming ones too. It seems like with all the other reality shows as well such as the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and The Voice of India the talent seems to be flowing from everywhere in and around India. On one such show we have Prashant Tamang of Darjeeling who in spite of no formal training has proved us all his credentials by reaching the top thirteen and I pray that he does better in the upcoming shows.

I would like to mention that, now Prashant Tamang having reached the final thirteen, everyone has been talking about him. People in Nepal have been saying that he has done all us Nepalis proud but I would like to ask, if not for achievers like Prashant have the Munglanes (Moong la neas) been thought of as Nepalis and treated as one? Well let me tell you that there are people on the other side who are as much Nepali and have been since. It├в€™s sad that sometimes the lines are drawn but ├в€┼УMunglan le bhule ko chaina.├в€

Specially when we look at the Nepali music world Munglan has made very big contributions and has not stopped doing so even today. Uday/Manila Sotang, Adrian Pradhan, Ciney Gurung ,Abhaya are a few names that come to my mind and if we go into looking at instrumentalists, there are more names. The history of Nepali Music often boils down to names such as Gopal Yonzon and Aruna Lama who are basically Munglanes as well. I think the song by the late great Aruna Lama - ├в€┼УNepali Gaurav Garchau Afnai Panma Ghamandi Tah Hoinau Hai, Sabai Ko Saathi Banne Baani Hamro Pachaute Tah Hoinau Hai├∦.." says enough to make one realize how much Nepal the Munglanes have carried with them.

The Munglanes have been referred to as ├в€┼Уchayateras├в€ but ├в€┼Уchayateras├в€ have never branded Nepalis, so I think it├в€™s time we started pondering upon such matters. What do you think? Lets Talk About It!

“My senior officers will decide my future”

On the sets

“My senior officers will decide my future”
- Prashant Tamang

Very rarely do you meet a policeman who can sing romantic songs. Indian Idol contestant Prashant Tamang, from Darjeeling, is a constable with Kolkata police who dreamt of becoming a singer. Though he never received any training, he listened to songs and picked up tunes. Once in the force, he joined its orchestra group and soon became popular.

Today, with the encouragement of his seniors and fellow constables, he is one of the 11 finalists of Indian Idol. Now, this soft-spoken policeman dreams of becoming a playback singer.

A singing policeman on the stage of Indian Idol. How did this happen?

I am a police constable. I joined Kolkata police force in 2002 and was in the special action force till 2006. At the end of 2006, an orchestra was formed within the department and I got a chance to perform in it. I gained a lot of confidence facing the audience there.

I never really watch Indian Idol, I never had the time. My seniors and colleagues encouraged me to participate and it is because of them that I am here today.

Despite being in special action force, did you secretly dream of becoming a singer?

Yes, I did dream of becoming a singer, but never thought it was possible. My father was in police and so my family expected me to become a policeman, too. But now I have the support of my colleagues.

Are you married? Or do you have a girlfriend?

No, I am not married. And I don’t have a girlfriend yet.

How do you rate your chances of winning the title?

Every contestant here is talented, some of them much more than me. I can win only if I perform really well. I want to request the janta to vote for the best singers. True talent should come up. India needs good singers and the deserving one should get the votes.

I don’t want to leave my friends behind just to climb the ladder. They’re like my family now. It makes me sad when anyone is eliminated.

Will you give up your job if you win the title?

If I win the title, I will do is talk to my seniors in the force and consult them about what to do. I’ve to get their permission. Of course, I dream of becoming a playback singer, but at the moment there are tough decisions to be taken.

I cannot leave the police force. It is because of them that I am here today. We’ll just have to see what happens later.

Which music directors do you dream of working with?

My favourite music directors are Jatin Lalit. If I win, and get a chance to sing for them, it will be a dream come true.

Who is your favourite judge and why?

Anu Maliik. He is very straightforward and says what is right, on your face. I don’t feel bad about it—it is important that we know our flaws at this stage.

Why are the performances a little low key in the Galas?

Yes, I agree the performances are not up to the mark. I guess we all are very tense and under pressure. Performances will definitely be better this week. I am trying hard to improve my performance.

You looked good in your suit. Are you concentrating on grooming yourself?

If we look good, we will become popular and thus get more votes. That is the only reason for my interest in designer clothes. Now that we have designers working for us, I would definitely like to take advantage of the opportunity.

Any message for your fans?

I am the first Nepali to be on this stage. I am sure my achievement is a matter of pride for the whole Nepali community across the world.
