Prayers, votes for singing hill icon

By IBNLive.com

Darjeeling: The ‘Queen of Hills’ Darjeeling is buzzing with excitement over the last one week.

The talk of the town being 22-year-old Prashant Tamang, a policeman who has made it to the final six of the hit TV show, Indian Idol.

Prashant’ fate is being linked to the Gorkha pride that town nurses.

"It fills me with pride when I watch him on TV. Tears roll down my eyes at the realisation that the people of the hills and people across the country are watching him too,” says Prashant’s sister, Archana.

Rampant signature campaigns are being organised for him and appeals to support him are also being made.

The passion to make Prashant win through SMS votes was such that violence broke out after cell phone subscribers found it difficult to send votes for him.

Besides the support that he has got from people, the prayers don't stop at his home as well.

"He is singing from the age of four. He has great passion for music but he has had no formal training. We would be very happy if he wins,” says Prashant’s mother, Rupa.

So there are no prizes for guessing where the people of Darjeeling would be sitting when Prashant makes his final drive for the Indian Idol title.
