Demand for Gorkhaland Over a Century Old

 from news.outlookindia.com

The demand for Gorkhaland preceded that for Telangana, going back to 1917 when the Hillmen's Association came into existence which petitioned for the administrative separation of Darjeeling and made the same demand again in 1930 and 1934.

But it was GNLF supremo Subhas Ghising who took up a violent movement for the first time for creation of Gorkhaland in 1986 comprising the three hill subdivisions of Darjeeling district -- Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong.

The Siliguri subdivision in the plains besides the adjoining Dooars and Terai in Jalpaiguri district in North Bengal were to be part of the proposed state.

The movement culminated in the Darjeeling Accord of 1988 and the formation of the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council after which the move for a separate state was shelved by Ghising.

"Their's (Telengana) was a bloody movement, but ours is Gandhian. Our movement will never be through armed struggle. Our agitation will be confined to bandhs, dharnas and hunger strikes," GJM General Secretary Roshan Giri said.

"If the demand for Telengana is five decades old, then we Gorkhas have been demanding a separate Gorkhaland state for over a century," GJM central committee member Harkabhadur Chetri told PTI over telephone from Darjeeling.

The main reason for demanding a separate state, he said, was that the identity and culture of the people in the hills was separate from those living in the plains of North Bengal.

Soon after the Gorkhaland stir came to an end in August 1988, the current president of the GJM, Bimal Gurung, who was a close aide of Ghising, parted ways with him.

After he left the GNLF, Gurung was hunted by the police in a murder case and for possession of illegal weapons.

Gurung surrendered to the police three years later. He subsequently floated the Pabatiya Bekari Sangathan to work for the unemployed youth.

Following a rapprochement with Ghishing, Gurung returned to GNLF, but had differences with the GNLF chief again after his nomination in a by-election to the post of a councillor to DGHC was refused. He was later expelled.

Gurung's came to the fore again when he successfully mobilised the hills in favour of Indian Idol III contestant Parshant Tamang, whom Ghishing refused to support initially. He set up branches of the Prashant Fan Club across Darjeeling. MORE

Riding the Prashant wave, Gurung floated the GJM on October 7, 2007.

Gurung took revenge on Ghising soon after and drove him out of Darjeeeling hills, which the GNLF supremo has been unable to enter again. He now lives at Pintail village close to Siliguri in the plains.

The GJM president also rejected Ghising's proposal for 6th Schedule for the hills which would give enhanced powers and revived the demand for Gorkhaland.

Gurung has vowed to create a separate state by 2010 through non-violent form of protests by refusing to pay taxes to the government including electricity and phone bills and had the number plates of vehicles running in the hills to GL (Gorkhaland). The GJM has also raised its own militia.

The West Bengal government has consistently opposed the creation of Gorkhaland. A tripartite meeting is scheduled on December 21 in Darjeeling.

Prashant Tamang to act in a Nepali movie

from Times of India

Prashant Tamang, the Indian Idol 3 winner, has started shooting for his first film---Nepal

Prashant, who shot to fame after winning the TV show amid raging debates about region-based bulk voting and an unsavoury reference to his ethnicity, hasn’t been heard about much, until now. The 26-year-old from Darjeeling has been camping in Nepal to start a new career in acting with the Nepali film Gurkha Paltan (The Gurkha Brigade).

Prashant, who became a youth icon in Nepal after winning the show, is shooting for the movie in picturesque Palpa district in central Nepal – it is known for its hand-woven cloth and the valiant Gurkha warriors who make their way to the British and Indian armies.

Nepali singer Narayan Rayamajhi is making his debut as a director with Gurkha Paltan, the tale of young Nepali men being forced to join foreign armies for want of opportunities in their own country and the hardship and privation they undergo. While casting for his film, Rayamajhi was looking for actors who would have an army background and he found Prashant – with his police career, he was perfect for the role. Prashant joined the West Bengal police when he was 18 to fend for his mother and sister, after the death of his father. In the film, he plays a fatherless boy who is compelled to join the British Army to take care of his mother and sister. Earlier, Prashant was expected to make his debut with a biopic by Nepali director Dinesh Raj Sharma, but the project is yet to go on the floors.

GANGTOK, March 16: Indian Idol 3 Prashant Tamang and his co-participant Mayang Chang have today appealed the people of Sikkim to vote aggressively for Football star Baichung Bhutia to win the coveted reality show Jhalak Dikhla Ja being telecasted in Sony Entertainment Television.

“If the people vote collectively and aggressively, Baichung can win the dance show. He has the potential of being the winner of the show,” the duo said.
Chang, one of the top five finalists of Indian Idol 3 and also an anchor of the recently concluded Indian Idol 4 is in the Capital along with Prashant.

Talking with SIKKIM EXPRESS today, the duo said their visit to Sikkim was completely a fun trip. “Although this is my third visit to Sikkim, I have always been fascinated by its sheer beauty and modesty of the people,” said Chang.

On being asked about his on screen chemistry with Deepali Kishore, the Chinese dentist from Dhanbad denied any such relationship and said that it was just projected wrongly in the wrong.
Chang, who is presently busy shaping his career in Bollywood, has many projects in the pipeline.

Kapil Thapa and Prashant Tamang

from The Himalayan Beacon

BY VISHAL ‘KIRAT’ RAI

In a Race for Humanity the onset of 21st century will be the ultimate era for unification and peace.

Prashant came soaring high above the view of an oridinary man. So melancholy was his voice he became a versatile singer. He came as a messiah of peace and unification chanting the flock -lore hymns -Gorkhali ko choro mo, etc
So dynamic was his approach he could take the audience with the stride, he swept the on-lookers and his fans by the might and charming charisma.
As a Messiah of peace, happiness and for a due cause of unification the Messiah Prashant brought about unseeingly backlash among the Gorkha society by his virtual support for Sourabhi. Where in both were blessed by the Gigantic Stalwart in the North-Eastern society as Bhupen Hazarika and the Maharaja of Barakland, Tripura blessed all the way for victory for the fourth Indian Idol, Sourabhi was immovable as Bed Rock.

Now the time has come once again for unity and strength. Prashant has left the unification of Gorkhas shattered by preaching in favor of Sourabhi.
Be it reality or be it biased or hypothesis:

Bhaichung Bhutia, is a Sikkimeses by virtue. A moment came in his life by roar and storm. He cannot buy the moment back but he attained fame that he cannot buy either. During the Olympic Torch rally Bhaichung denied the Olympic Authority not to participate in the Olympic Torch Race. He had a soft corner for the Tibetans and the Chinese Repression.
Prashant the insane Gorkha singer had vehemently proved this wrong and has broken the ethnic sentiments of the Gorkhas scattered in and around the Indian Sub-continent. He is not only butchered the unification but betrayed the cause of Gorkhas as a whole.

Mercy be on Kapil, born as Gorkha and serving the Army fighting the external and internal terrorism and the while enchanting his fellow army men with soothing patriotic songs and now he’s is a hunt to thrill the World of Gorkhas alone. Though originally from Dehradun his mind and soul are still vibrating in the scanty Hills of Darjeeling and Sikkim. Kapil Thapa born in a Hill Station, nurtured and fostered among the Army personnel and a strict cultured disciplinary and has a scene of atheistic value too.

Whether or not Prashant was forcibly brought under duress, this is still a disgrace to a man the whole Gorkha World has gambled for his Paradise alone and now he’s paid the price for. He betrayed, he butchered he’s a conspirator he’s treachered the sentiment of Gorkhas.

Had this Prashant denied to campaigning for Sourabhi forcibly under duress, he would have a second welcome back home with highest degree of Honor that no one had ever attained in a life time.

Another point this denial would have made Prashant a Demi God amongst the world of Gorkhas. But Prashant proved that we Gorkhas can easily be TAMED, we can’t decide our fate. To be humble is a good sign but being TAMED by someone is a blatant blunder that can’t be forgiven. Now my question is when Siliguri was burning in a communal violence due to the unhold remark by Red FM Brady - Prashant should realize or else the Gorkhas should make an apology to Red FM Brady understanding the concept.
